Why by hand? What the research says
Their reading ability was strongly tied to how well they could write characters, far more than to their sense of sounds.
Tan et al., 2005 · PNAS
Writing characters by hand led to better recognition and stronger links to their meaning. Typing pinyin mainly helped with sound.
Guan et al., 2011 · Journal of Educational Psychology
Those who wrote by hand learned faster than those who typed or watched, some in just two sessions, and read new words better afterwards.
Wiley & Rapp, 2021 · Psychological Science
智慧 Chinese Wisdom
You can know every word and still miss the meaning.
Chinese is full of short sayings shaped by its history, and people use them every day. Every Field Guide closes with one: what it means and the thinking behind it. The wisdom is often universal, so it stays with you long after the guide.
